San Juan River (Bluff to Clay Hills)

About This Permit

The San Juan River flows 84 miles through canyon lands of southeastern Utah, passing ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins, petroglyphs, and dramatic canyon scenery. Class II–III rapids make it accessible for open canoes and kayaks alongside rafts. BLM-managed launches require a permit through recreation.gov; it is one of the more permit-accessible desert river trips in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a San Juan River trip?
The most popular section runs from Sand Island (Bluff) to Mexican Hat (26 miles, 2–3 days) or all the way to Clay Hills Crossing (84 miles, 5–7 days). A shorter day or overnight trip runs Sand Island to Butler Wash (about 10 miles).
How does the San Juan River permit lottery work?
BLM runs a pre-season lottery for the peak April 15 – July 15 window. Applications open December 1 at 8am MST and close January 31. Results are announced around February 14; winners must confirm by March 15. Any unconfirmed permits are released March 16 on a first-come, first-served basis. Walk-up permits are not available during the peak season lottery period.
Is the San Juan appropriate for beginner rafters?
Yes — one of the more beginner-friendly desert river trips. Class II–III rapids are manageable for paddlers with basic instruction. The main challenges are desert logistics (no services, hot summers) and navigation where the river braids in low water.
What archaeological sites are along the San Juan?
Hundreds of Ancestral Puebloan sites including cliff dwellings, granaries, and extensive petroglyph panels. Butler Wash Ruins and various alcove sites are accessible on foot from the river. All sites are federally protected.
