Owyhee River Canyons (Lower)

About This Permit

The lower Owyhee cuts through 200-foot rhyolite canyon walls in one of the most remote river corridors in the American West. The season is brutally short — typically 6–10 weeks of runnable water in spring — but the solitude, canyon color, and hot springs along the route make it worth the logistical effort. Rarely will you see another party over 3–4 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Owyhee River runnable?
The window is typically March through late May, entirely dependent on snowmelt. Flow below 500 cfs makes the river too shallow; above 5,000 cfs it's dangerously powerful. Monitor the USGS gauge near Rome, OR.
How remote is the Owyhee?
Very — the Rome to Birch Creek section has no road access for the entire route. Cell service is essentially nonexistent. Emergency evacuation requires helicopter. This is a serious expedition for self-sufficient parties with solid river rescue skills.
What are the rapids like on the Owyhee?
The Lower Owyhee is primarily Class III with several Class IV rapids in canyon constrictions. The character varies enormously with flow — what's Class III at 1,500 cfs can be Class IV at 3,000 cfs. Scouting is essential.
