Middle Fork of the Salmon River

About This Permit

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is universally recognized as one of the greatest whitewater rivers in the world — a 100-mile wilderness run through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48. Nearly 100 named rapids, hot springs, remote lodges, and total roadless wilderness characterize this bucket-list float. Launch permits are among the most competitive in the US river permit system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a Middle Fork launch permit?
The Forest Service issues permits via lottery at recreation.gov, with applications due in January for the coming season. The lottery is extremely competitive for prime dates (June–August). Shoulder season dates (May, September) have lower demand. A limited number of permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning in mid-March.
How difficult is the Middle Fork?
The Middle Fork has nearly 100 rapids, most Class III–IV. Powerhouse Rapid, Velvet Falls, and Tappan Falls are the standout technical drops. High water in May and early June makes the river significantly more powerful and dangerous. Most private groups need experienced paddlers and comprehensive rigging skills.
Can I fly in to the river?
Yes — several backcountry airstrips near the river allow float trips to start from Indian Creek (about 30 miles into the canyon) rather than Boundary Creek. This avoids the upper flatwater section and puts you in the canyon faster. Charter flights operate from McCall and Salmon, Idaho.
