Middle Fork of the Salmon River

About This Permit

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is widely regarded as the finest multi-day whitewater river trip in the United States — 104 miles of continuous Class IV rapids through a roadless Idaho wilderness canyon, with hot springs and abundant wildlife. Private (noncommercial) launches are allocated via the 4 Rivers lottery and control-season rules. Commercial operators also run the Middle Fork under separate authorizations; your reservation here is noncommercial unless you are an authorized commercial operator. Only 7 private parties launch per day during the control season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How competitive is a Middle Fork Salmon permit?
Extremely competitive — one of the hardest river permits to score in the western U.S. Seven private launches per day compete against a very large applicant pool in the 4 Rivers advance lottery. Plan years ahead.
How does the Middle Fork Salmon lottery work?
Permits are awarded through the USFS "4 Rivers" lottery on recreation.gov. The control season runs May 28 – September 3. Applications are submitted December 1 – January 31 for the following summer; notifications go out mid-February. Pre-season dates become available first-come starting October 1 of the prior year.
How long is a Middle Fork Salmon trip?
The standard float runs 104 miles from Dagger Falls to the Main Salmon confluence. Maximum days allowed: 1–10 people up to 8 days; 11–20 people up to 7 days; 21–24 people up to 6 days. From Aug 8 through Sept 15, a 12-watercraft maximum per group applies to protect Chinook salmon spawning.
Can I get a last-minute Middle Fork permit?
Rare but possible — cancellations do appear on recreation.gov. PermitAlert checks every 60 seconds and will text you the moment a launch date opens.
