Labyrinth & Stillwater Canyon — Green River

About This Permit

Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons offer one of the most spectacular and remote flatwater canoe/kayak trips in the American West — 68 miles of the Green River carving through sculpted canyon walls of Entrada sandstone, with no motorized access, ancient pictographs, and total silence save for the current. The Stillwater section ends at the confluence with the Colorado River inside Canyonlands NP, where a jet boat shuttle is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need technical whitewater skills for this trip?
No — Labyrinth and Stillwater are flatwater with no significant rapids. The challenge is navigation (the canyon meanders extensively), sun exposure, and logistics. It is ideal for canoeists and sea kayakers comfortable with multi-day desert trips.
How do I get out at the end?
The take-out at the Confluence inside Canyonlands NP has no road access. Most groups either hire the Tex's Riverways jet boat shuttle from Moab (the standard exit) or continue down Cataract Canyon (Class IV–V, significantly more technical, additional permit required).
Is a permit required?
A BLM permit is required for overnight use. Day trips do not need a permit. Permits are available on recreation.gov and are generally not hard to obtain outside peak spring season (March–May). Campfires require a fire pan and ash removal.
