Big Bend National Park Backcountry

About This Permit

Big Bend is the largest national park in Texas and one of the least visited major parks in the country, offering near-total solitude on most backcountry routes. The Chisos Mountains' South Rim — a 12-mile loop with 2,000-foot views into Mexico — is the premier overnight route and the hardest permit to get in the park.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to backpack Big Bend?
October through April is the prime window — highs in the 60s–70s at elevation. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F in the desert and 90°F in the Chisos, making strenuous hiking dangerous. Spring (March–April) brings wildflowers and is the most popular season.
How competitive are Big Bend backcountry permits?
Less competitive than western parks overall — the remoteness filters out casual visitors. The Chisos Mountains zones (especially South Rim and Boot Canyon) are the exception and can book out weeks ahead during spring peak. Desert and river corridor zones typically have good availability.
Can I canoe the Rio Grande through Big Bend?
Yes — river permits are required for the river corridor and are separate from backcountry hiking permits. Three major canyons (Santa Elena, Mariscal, Boquillas) offer multi-day paddling. International border regulations apply throughout.
