Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

About This Permit

Assateague Island is a 37-mile barrier island off the Maryland coast, famous for its wild ponies. The National Seashore campground offers oceanside and bayside camping with the rare combination of Atlantic surf access and pony sightings from your campsite. The ferry-free access (you drive on) keeps it accessible, while the wild setting keeps it feeling remote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the wild ponies at Assateague?
Yes — the Maryland herd roams freely through the campground. They are wild animals; do not feed, approach, or attempt to pet them. Pony bites and kicks are common injuries here. View from a safe distance.
What is the difference between oceanside and bayside campsites?
Oceanside sites offer direct Atlantic beach access but are more exposed to wind. Bayside sites face Sinepuxent Bay and are more sheltered — preferred for tents in windy conditions. Oceanside is spectacular for watching sunrises over the water.
Are mosquitoes a problem at Assateague?
Yes — Assateague has notoriously aggressive mosquitoes and biting midges, especially May through September. Screened shelters are strongly recommended. October–April conditions are far more pleasant.
