The Apostle Islands are 21 islands scattered in the southwestern corner of Lake Superior, preserved as a National Lakeshore. The islands are famous for their sea caves carved into Bayfield sandstone, pristine beaches, historic lighthouses, and old-growth forest. Camping on the islands requires a backcountry permit and boat or water taxi access. The sea caves on Mawikwe Bay (accessible by kayak in summer or ice walk in winter) are among the most spectacular natural features in the Great Lakes.
